The Phragmipedium Cardinale is a historic and highly popular hybrid slipper orchid, registered in 1882, making it one of the classic crosses in orchid history. It is a secondary hybrid resulting from a cross between the hybrid Phragmipedium Sedenii and the species Phragmipedium schlimii. This parentage combines the charming, compact size and rosy-pink pouch of P. schlimii with the more vigorous, multi-flowering habit of P. Sedenii (which is itself a hybrid of P. schlimii x P. longifolium). The resulting flowers typically feature a lovely combination of pink, rose-red, and white hues, often with sequential blooming on a single spike, meaning the display can last for an extended period.

Culturally, Phragmipedium Cardinale is often considered one of the easier Phragmipedium hybrids to grow, making it a good choice for orchid enthusiasts. Like many “wet-growing” Phragmipediums, it requires a consistent supply of moisture and should never be allowed to dry out completely—many growers even recommend standing the pot in a shallow saucer of water. It thrives in bright, indirect light (similar to Cattleyas) and prefers intermediate temperatures, ideally () during the day and a distinct drop at night. Good air circulation and high humidity (around ) are also vital for healthy growth and bloom production.
